Interstate 81 forms a major north-south corridor through the state of Pennsylvania, serving the boroughs of Chambersburg and Carlisle, where it meets the Pennsylvania Turnpike but does not interchange with it. Around the state capital of Harrisburg, the route forms the northeastern section of Pennsylvania's Capital Beltway. The route then travels northeast towards the Wyoming Valley, where it serves the cities of Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, then heads north through the Endless Mountains region towards the state line.
I-83 begins on the Pennsylvania- Maryland border near Shrewsbury, PA and travels northerly through York to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Uniquely for an Interstate near the east coast, I-83 has a business route through downtown York, known as Interstate 83 Business. Near US 30 Lincoln Highway, the Interstate turns west for a short distance, then north again to interchange with the U.S. route. Beyond US 30, I-83 resumes its straight path, running due north out of York. North of Pennsylvania Route 295, I-83 is known as the Susquehanna Expressway as it travels northerly toward Harrisburg and intersects with the Pennsylvania Turnpike. North of I-76, I-83 passes through New Cumberland before merging with Pennsylvania Route 581 in Lemoyne. North of Lemoyne, it becomes the Harrisburg Expressway and crosses the Susquehanna river before passing the Harrisburg central business district and intersection with I-283, US 322 and I-81.
I-78 begins at a directional-T interchange with Interstate 81 in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania,(about one hour north of Harrisburg) and then continues on an easterly direction through Berks, Northampton and Lehigh Counties as well as Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton, into New Jersey.
As the preeminent means of transportation in Pennsylvania, Routes 78, 81 and 83 have a very high concentration of tractor trailers, trucks, rigs and commercial vehicles, construction vehicles, along with passenger cars at any given time. Dangerous driving conditions caused by large trucks are the leading safety problem on the turnpike. The northern end of the turnpike can be particularly dangerous, especially during the winter months, where a combination of snow, ice, narrow up and down roads and a volume of tractor trailer and 18 wheelers can result in death.
